Expression of Interest Avian Influenza HPAI Risk Assessment in Australian Dairy Cattle

The Australian dairy industry is actively addressing the potential risks posed by Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in dairy cattle, particularly the H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b strain. This strain has caused significant disease and production losses globally and has led to mild infections in farm workers. Although Australia is currently free from H5N1, there is a need for proactive risk management and planning to protect the industry from potential future outbreaks.

In partnership with Dairy Australia, Ausvet Pty Ltd, and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF), an important evaluation is being conducted to assess the risk of HPAI introduction and spread across Australian dairy farms. The project aims to identify the risks of H5N1 transmission between and within dairy herds, which is crucial for the long-term health of the industry.

A key element of this project is the comprehensive on-farm biosecurity assessment, which will take place on 25 randomly selected dairy farms across the country. These assessments will provide valuable insights and will form the foundation for practical, evidence-based recommendations on how to reduce the risk of H5N1 entering and spreading within dairy operations.

By participating in this project, dairy farmers can play an active role in safeguarding the industry and ensure their farm’s biosecurity measures are aligned with best practices for preventing disease transmission.
